drill 46

off drive (2)

Objective: To develop the basic technique of the off drive.

Equipment: One ball, bat, batting tee, set of stumps and cones per group.

Description: This practice is the same as for the straight drive (drill 42), but the angle of the goal is different to encourage the off drive. From the batter’s perspective, if a straight goal is at the 12 o’clock position, the off drive goal is between 1 and 2 on the clock face. The ‘goal’ should be set up using cones 5 m apart and about 8 m from the batter, with two fielders in the goal. You can use a drop feed or bobble feed on a line just outside off stump. The batter attempts to strike it through the goal. Each player should have six goes. A player scores a point if they hit the ball in line with the goal and the fielder stops it, or 4 points if it goes through the goal. Batters have six goes each then change position, moving clockwise.

Coaching points: The coaching points are the same as for drill 44. The first part of the player’s body that moves towards the ball is the leading shoulder and head (leading shoulder is left for right-handers and right for left-handers). The front leg (left for right-handers) should step so that the foot is alongside the ball. Make sure players take a big enough step to ensure they hit the ball underneath their eyes.

Progression: After advancing from the bobble feed, move on to an over-arm feed on the same line.
